Vegas Seven | Turf | Do the Twist

Check out this great article on my opening act, and good friend, Alonzo Jones, better known as… Turf!

“Do The Twist” – Taken from Vegas Seven, Steve Bornfeld: http://www.vegasseven.com/ae/2013/05/14/do-twist

He was homeless for a while and famous for a moment. Then San Francisco contortionist/dancer Alonzo Jones arrived in Vegas to make the Strip his ‘Turf.’

Somewhere, a chiropractor hopes to hit the patient jackpot.

“Doctors go ballistic when I walk into their office!” says—make that gleefully chortles—Alonzo Jones, a.k.a., Turf, a.k.a. the dancing, double-jointed, human twisty toy knotted up onstage, whose afternoon audience at the Quad’s Q Theater could suffer sympathy arthritis pains just watching him.

“When I go for a checkup or X-rays, they can’t wait. They’re like, ‘That’s the kid! Come right here! Lay right here!’”

Hopefully, no sawbones will buy a yacht off the medical expenses of the highly pliable 22-year-old—a once-homeless San Francisco street dancer-turned-America’s Got Talent semifinalist-turned-Vegas Strip performer.

How can Jones break any bones when, by all visual evidence, he has none? Or at least none stiff enough to snap? Look at him. LOOK AT HIM. Nature didn’t intend for arms and legs to stick up there and slide through there and rotate through there and wind up there.

Has anyone booked this guy for a pretzel commercial—or would he give pretzels an inferiority complex?

“I love the oh-my-God! reaction because it’s so real, it lets me know it’s a talent that people don’t see every day,” he says of his moves, which he’s even named: Meet The X Factor, The Windmill, The Airwalk and The Optimus Prime.

(How about … The Ouch!) Boldly, Jones adopted his stage name, Turf, from the turf-dancing style to which he brought national attention—and garnished with anatomy-defying exertions—on America’s Got Talent last year. Originated in the streets of Oakland in the 1990s (with certain elements tracing back to the “Oakland Boogaloo” movement of the 1960s), turf dancing—which stands for “Taking Up Room on the Floor”—is a stylistic stew of steps. Mostly a hip-hop mash-up, it’s improvisational, free-flowing, everything-including-the-kitchen-sink dancing.

Beyond the moves a culture sprang up, centered on “dance battles,” sometimes to (nonviolently) settle disputes between street kids, sometimes simply to compete.

“You would have the King Tuts back in the day,” Jones explains (paging Steve Martin). “Now you got people [who] do digits with their fingers, and finger-tutting with their feet, and then the contortions getting into the hip-hop scene. It’s very technical. ”

Announcing My Pilot for Travel Channel! “Vegas Strip Search”

Friends, I’m thrilled to make the TV announcement I’ve been hinting at for months now…

I have a pilot on the Travel Channel for my own TV show, “Vegas Strip Search,” that will air on Saturday, April 6th at 3pm EDT!  Obviously, I am excited beyond words.  This is a great step, but I need your help to make this show go to series.

“Vegas Strip Search” follows my search for undiscovered hidden talent in the nooks and crannies of North America.  I visit different venues and local cultures, and connect with a vast variety of performers in their worlds.  The performers do their best to teach me their talent, so the audience can see just how difficult their skills are to master.  I choose 1 performer out of 4 each episode to come join me in my show at The Quad to get a shot at playing a big showroom in Vegas.

The concept came from my background as a street performer who, over years working through different markets (street performing, fairs, cruise ships, colleges) eventually got my own show in Vegas.  I thought ‘what if I could lightwarp talented acts to a Vegas stage who might not otherwise get the opportunity?’  It’s been over a year in development working with Pangolin Pictures in New York, and now…

The fate of “Vegas Strip Search” will be determined by 2 things: ratings on Saturday, April 6th, 3pm EDT, and BUZZ.  My fans have done some incredible things for me throughout my career, from raising money to “joggle” the Disney Marathon to crowdfunding “The People’s Arch.”  I am keeping my fingers crossed that with your support we can create enough buzz to turn this episode into a full series.  Thank you!

Recycled Percussion had their media night at The Quad on March 14th.  If you haven’t seen Recycled Percussion’s show yet, make sure you head on over to The Quad and get on that!  It’s fun, interactive, and really freakin LOUD!!  Very talented guys.  I’m happy to be sharing The Q Theater with both Recycled Percussion (7:30pm show), and Frank Marino’s Divas (9:30pm show).

Corporate Event Entertainment for Rite Aid

rite-aid-logoCorporate Event Entertainment Testimonial

“Dear Jeff: I just want to thank you again for performing at our Annual Excellence Awards program in Baltimore, MD on March 4, 2013.  You are truly an amazing performer who captured the crowd’s attention in the very first seconds of entering our stage.  Your natural wit, phenomenal skills as a juggler and polished professionalism truly added a level of entertainment that our program has not seen in this annual event.

Perhaps the best part of working with you was your kind and professional manner.  You are confident in your own skills and talents, but more importantly you were very focused on meeting the needs of our organization and customizing your performance for our audience.  You cared about meeting our needs and ensuring that we had a memorable experience.  And we did!  The audience loved you from the first moments, and you added an energy to the show that we have not seen in recent years.

I really cannot say enough good things about you and I truly wish you well in all your future endeavors.  Thanks again for sharing your talents with us.”

Sincerely,

Janice L. Spurlock

Purina PetStay Program at Caesars Hotels

I shot a fun promo for Purina today at The Rio promoting the Purina PetStay program.  I did a “trick-off” with one of Purina’s trained dogs, alternating tricks back forth.  I’m pretty sure I lost!

I didn’t even know about this program… you can bring your doggie with you to Caesars Hotels!  How cool is that??  Answer: very cool.

A bit more about the PetStay program… taken from http://www.caesars.com/petstaylasvegas:

Caesars Palace, Paris Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood, Harrah’s Las Vegas, Flamingo Las Vegas, Bally’s Las Vegas, Rio Las Vegas Hotel & Casino, and The Quad in Las Vegas are rolling out the red carpet for traveling dogs, with the launch of “PetStay,” the resorts’ new dog-friendly hotel program.

Guests participating in the PetStay program are greeted by several canine-friendly in-room amenities including a mat, food and water dishes, disposable waste bags and dog treats.

Each PetStay resort hosts a designated PetStay area within the hotel, equipped with welcome packets that direct guests to outdoor relief areas and dog walking routes. Additional Information about dog-friendly items for purchase and nearby dog services (such as grooming, walking and veterinary care) is available upon check-in at each of the participating resorts.

Win-Win Entertainment Event | Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada | 2013 Heart of Hope Luncheon

Win-Win EntertainmentOn February 7, Win-Win proudly assisted Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada with its 2013 Heart of Hope luncheon.  The event honored some amazing members of the community, including Gustav and Denise Mauler and the Fertitta Family Foundation.  Win-Win arranged for a show-stopping performance by BBR Las Vegas, a talented trio of young women whose voices harken back to the golden age of groups such as The Andrews Sisters, but with a sophisticated, seductive twist.  BBR (Brunette, Blonde & Redhead) features Anne Martinez, Savannah Smith, and Tara Palsha.  We’re honored to have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, one of the largest private nonprofit social service providers in the state.  The organization provides help and creates hope for untold numbers of people in need in our community, regardless of their religious or economic backgrounds.
