MC for Norm Crosby, Comedy Cavalcade

Jeff Civillico and Norm Crosby

Hangin with Norm

Sunday was an exciting day– I had the honor of sharing the stage with living legend Norm Crosby as the MC for “Comedy Cavalcade” at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.  What an inspiration to see someone who is 83 not only still performing, but absolutely killing it on stage!

As the MC, I had spent some time researching, recording, and memorizing many of Norm’s accomplishments over the years for his introduction.  Moments before I was to bring him on, I ran the intro by him backstage.  After I finished, he looked up at me and said “That sounds like an obituary!  Just say this: ‘Please welcome the master of the malaprop, Norm Crosby.”

Awesome.

“Jeff did a great job hosting Comedy Cavalcade.  He grabbed the audience from his first moments on stage and garnered high praise from headliner Norm Crosby.”   –Ryan Hill, Producer

MC Showcase for NACA Conference (Mid-Atlantic Region)

Over the weekend, I was happy to showcase as MC for the National Association of Campus Activities Conference in Lancaster, PA.  The energy in the room was fantastic, and I had a blast.  I met a ton of extremely talented, warm performers as well… most notably the 5 acts I introduced throughout the show: The Mayhem Poets (slam poetry), Preston Pugmire (singer / songwriter), Cady Groves (singer / songwriter), Seaton Smith (comedian), Kooley High (hip hop band).

I was amazed at the number of students in the audience tweeting in real-time about what they were seeing.  There was a laptop backstage showing a live NACA twitter feed that all of us couldn’t help being drawn to.  It was either a horrible idea, or the coolest thing ever… I still can’t decide.  Luckily I got good reviews, or else going back on stage for set after set would have been brutal!

Some of my favorite Jeff tweets:

Laura: Dear @jeffcivillico… I love your facial Expressions!!

Jason: This juggler is AWESOME!!!

Jeremy: I suddenly wanna learn how to juggle.

Fatima: yay! Jeff =D

Stacey: balancing that ladder on your chin was crazy!! Loved it!

Jazlyn: @jeffcivillico is riding his juggling clubs…but hot and awesome doing it!

Shaun: @jeffcivillico was hilarious getting on that unicycle. Great emcee today

Adrianne: laughing. too. hard. to. tweet.

Brian: best emcee of the conference.

Thanks to everyone who posted pictures on my facebook and twitter!  Here are a few of the best.  Hope to see you at the National Convention!

“5 Reasons to Hire a Professional Corporate MC”

Corporate MC s are more essential to an event than one may think. So you’re having an event, and you’re spending all of this money on renting a hall, catering the event, serving the alcohol, getting a sound company, etc.   Why Corporate MCnot save a few bucks and have Bob from your company be the Corporate MC for the evening?  Bob is funny, and people like him– it’s tempting.  Here’s why you should NOT go down that path.

Consider these 5 reasons to give Bob the night off, and spend a few extra bucks to hire a corporate MC:

1)    Pressure: Bob is really funny in small groups.  But when the house lights go down and the mic goes hot, it’s a completely different game.  Only a very small percentage of people are equally comfortable standing on stage speaking clearly in a formal situation as they are joking around the office with a couple of their co-workers.  There is nothing more painful than seeing a coworker struggle on stage in front of his or her peers.  No matter who is being honored that evening or what the company is celebrating, it will all be overshadowed by this distraction.
