GEMA Las Vegas is currently in its seed year. “GEMA” is the Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance. From http://www.gema-hoyas.org: Founded in 2002, The Georgetown Entertainment & Media Alliance (GEMA) aims to elevate Georgetown’s profile in the entertainment and media community, by strengthening the ties between the University and its alumni and by developing relevant programs and resources for both alumni and current Georgetown students. Comprised of alumni, students, parents and friends affiliated with the media and entertainment industry, GEMA has grown to over 2,000 members representing a diversity of specialties including film, television, theater, publishing, music, sports, journalism, public relations and many other fields in media and entertainment.
I’ve decided to create a 3-month internship program for two Georgetown University students interested in coming to Las Vegas for the summer to work hands-on in the live entertainment industry as part of GEMA Las Vegas.
I wish that something like this had existed several years ago when I was at Georgetown, so I think it’s only right to create the opportunity for currents students now. I want to give back to the institution that has given so much to me.
Duties will be a mix of front-line tickets sales and distribution, and backend marketing / promoting.
The candidate is expected to be at least 21 years of age by the start of the internship on May 21, 2012.
Interns will be expected to work 40 hrs a week, spread over a 6-day show schedule. Rough schedule (subject to change) will be 2 flexible hours of business work during the day, 4 set hours/night to work Jeff’s show from 5-9PM.
Housing is provided, and interns will be given a stipend for other living expenses.
Purpose – The purpose of this internship is to provide an opportunity otherwise unavailable to Georgetown students interested in the business of live entertainment. The ideal candidate is a student who is interested in exploring how many different facets of the live entertainment industry– event planning, show marketing, ticket distribution, marketing, branding, promoting, etc.
Duties and responsibilities will range across a broad spectrum, including:
-Show setup / breakdown
-Show promoting – Ticket brokers on the Strip, locations off-Strip
-Basic technical work – sound and lights
-Social media marketing
-Video work – filming / editing / posting
-Administration work – building database

Necessary Skills and Attributes
People Skills – People skills are essential to this internship. Students will be interacting with the public every day. They need to be upbeat, outgoing, and positive individuals.
Reasoning Ability – The ability to solve problems is essential to any job. Students will be required to think on their feet and handle customer service issues as they arise.
Work / life balance – Las Vegas offers a unique set of challenges to any newcomer. This internship is supposed to be fun, but will be a lot of work as well. Students will be required to maintain strict distinctions between work and play. Reckless behavior will not be tolerated.
