I like to do crazy stuff. I like to do things for charity. So it was only a matter of time before I connected with Maggie Schwarz (no “T” – she’s very passionate about that), regional VP of Special Olympics Nevada.
“Over the Edge” is a ridiculously awesome fundraiser in which Special Olympics Nevada enlists volunteers to rappel literally over the edge of Planet Hollywood Casino and down 350 feet to The Strip. I did it last year, and I can say that it is absolutely terrifying… in the best possible way. I have bungee jumped and skydived (skydoved?) many times, but this is better (worse?) because it’s much slower and more deliberate (insane?). It takes a good 15-20 minutes, and you have to remain calm and in control the whole way down.
I have decided to once again go “Over the Edge,” although this year I’m kicking it up a notch and strapping a unicycle to my body and taping my feet to the pedals because… well, why not?? I have to top last year somehow. And plus, it’s Vegas– it’ll look ridiculous from The Strip when people look up hehe. My original intention was to build a custom 20′ tall unicycle and actually wheel down the side of the building… but APPARENTLY Planet Hollywood wasn’t COOL with me running my TIRE down the entire length of their BUILDING!! Can’t imagine why :)[vimeo clip_id=75265609 width=600 height=350]
Each performer is required to raise a minimum of $1000 in order to qualify for rappelling. Although $1,000 seems like a lot of money, it’s really only 100 people giving $10, or 200 people giving $5. It’s also 1000 people giving $1, but that’s just ridiculous.
This is Special Olympics Nevada’s biggest fundraiser of the year, so its success is crucial to their year’s worth of programming and events. And the best part is that every dollar raised stays right here in Nevada. Learn more about Special Olympics Nevada.
Many people might be nervous about raising $1000 in just a few weeks, but I am confident that together we can do this. After all, this is the same fan base that raised $11,000+ in 6 days to build a giant balloon :)
Monday I was on Channel 13, ABC in Las Vegas’ “The Morning Blend” with athlete Matt, regional VP Maggie, and of course friend and goofball host Shawn Tempesta. Tomorrow I will be on Channel 8, again with Matt to promote the event. 5:20am call time… ouch!
Got a nice mention in the Las Vegas Review Journal as well: http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/fundraisers-go-jump-tall-building
We still need 9 rappellers to hit our goal of 70. If you think you might be interested in getting involved in this truly awesome event, head to OverTheEdgeLasVegas.com.
Thank you for allowing me to live this crazy, fun, fulfilling life!
